Q&A with Meghan

Q: How did you decide to pursue technical apparel design and product development?

A: Well technical design pretty much found me. I went to school for Fashion Design because I had big dreams to design women’s apparel. The first job I had was working for a pattern maker for a women’s line in San Francisco. Shortly after, I took a job working with street bike apparel, and the technical side of it took me over. Tech design is all about solving puzzles and finding the best, most efficient way to solve the problem and communicate it to our vendors. I love making a garment fit someone just perfectly, it fires me up.

Q: What is one of the most important things you learned about technical design and product development when working at Lucy Activewear and how does it apply to your current work with Redfrog Athletics and other brands?

A: That is a little hard to answer because there were so many things! I worked with an amazing and extremely talented pattern maker, who taught me the key to good fit, and how to translate that to a pattern. Now I have such an eye for bad fitting garments that it’s really hard for me to dress myself! :)

I also learned that communication and teamwork are essential. You’re all in it together!

Q: What is your favorite part of the garment design process?

A: My most favorite part of the design process is working with the designer to achieve their desired look for their style. Some designers I’ve worked with have had some crazy ideas, and it has been very fun to problem solve those ideas into an actual functioning garment.

Q: What is the most difficult part of the garment design process?

A: I would say receiving a garment back from the factory that is completely wrong. They either graded (process used to size clothing) it wrong, used the wrong quality of fabric or simply didn’t understand or apply a change that was requested. We all work so hard and spend so much time communicating with the factory, so it can be disappointing.

Q: Have you done the designing component of athletic wear as well as the technical side?

A: Yes, I did some designing when I was working for Fox Racing. They were short on people, who wanted to design women’s motorcycle jackets, so I stepped in and ventured from the technical realm to the design side. It was fun to do some designs, but my heart is more for the technical aspect of apparel.

Q: What excites you about working with Redfrog?

A: Redfrog is awesome! I love that all of us women came together and believed in making something wonderful other women out there will really appreciate. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Q: Outside of work, how do you spend your time?

A: Outside of work, I run around and be silly with my two little girls, Hannah and Emma. They keep me super busy with park / hiking adventures and playdates. Aside from hanging out with my girls, my awesome husband, Michael, and I enjoy hanging out with each other, going to the gym or walking around the neighborhood with the kids. I also like hiding in the bathroom to play a game or two on my phone. Is that weird?

Q: What is your favorite form of movement (exercise or creative outlet)?

A: I actually really like pilates. I find it helps slow me down and really focus on what my body is telling me. Afterwards, I want to take a nap!

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: I am just so thankful to have the opportunity to work for Redfrog. It’s been a blast, and I never want it to end!
